With reversed seasons, wildlife migrations, and regional weather patterns to consider, knowing when to cruise ensures you get the best possible experience. Let’s dive into the ideal times to visit these bucket-list destinations so you can plan the voyage of a lifetime!
Australia and New Zealand
Australia and New Zealand are at the top of my bucket list as year-round cruising destinations. Cruising Down Under offers a mix of vibrant cities, unique wildlife, and jaw-dropping natural wonders. Remember that the seasons are reversed in the Northern Hemisphere, which adds to the adventure.
- Peak Season (December to February) is the most popular time to visit Australia. Australian summer falls between December and February, with hot and sunny days and high humidity, making for great surfing and enjoyable beach days. March and April mark the start of the dry season and the fall. Australia is a large continent, so the climates and temperatures can vary between regions.
- Shoulder Seasons (October/November and March/April): If you want milder temperatures but still want to enjoy all the beaches, these months are the best time to cruise. Since the temperatures are lower, you can also enjoy hiking during these months.
Low Season (June to August): This time has rainy days, but you can enjoy the Aurora Australis across the skies in areas like Tasmania.

South America
Like Antarctica and New Zealand, South America experiences summer when the Northern Hemisphere is in winter. Summer is November through May; the further south you travel, the colder it can be. South America allows cruisers to explore ancient civilizations, beautiful mountains, rainforests, and delicious cuisines. However, cruises are only available in the summer if you would like to visit Patagonia and Cape Horn since the weather and seas in the winter are too rough for passage.
- Peak Season (December to March): The weather is warm, and you can enjoy Carnival in Brazil during March. Carnival season is usually Brazil’s biggest event, taking place before Ash Wednesday. If you are religious, a cruise during this time will give you an unforgettable experience. December and January give you the best opportunity to experience wildlife like penguins and whales.
- Shoulder Season (October/November and April): Travel during these months for smaller crowds and lower prices. October and November are the best times to visit ancient cities on your cruise, like Machu Picchu.

Antarctica
Yup! You can cruise to Antarctica! This otherworldly destination offers icy landscapes, incredible wildlife, and unparalleled adventure.
- Optimal Cruise Time (November to March): You should go during the Antarctic summer. This time offers the most daylight hours, warmer temperatures, and the peak of wildlife activity, including penguin breeding and whale watching. December is the warmest month to visit, and by warm, I mean 10 degrees Celsius or 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
Tips for Timing Your Cruise
- Calm Waters: For those prone to seasickness, consider Mediterranean cruises during spring and early summer or the Gulf of Mexico from December to June, as these regions often have calm seas.
- Travel Insurance: If you are looking to travel during hurricane or monsoon season or as an added shield of protection, I recommend adding travel protection to your cruise vacation.
- Monsoon Considerations: Be cautious of the monsoon season in Southeast Asia, which typically runs from June to October.
No matter where your wanderlust takes you, choosing the right time to go is the key to an unforgettable cruise. Whether you want to bask in the Australian summer, witness Carnival in Brazil, or marvel at Antarctica’s icy wonders, understanding the seasons and their unique offerings will help you maximize your experience.
From calmer waters to ideal wildlife spotting and vibrant cultural festivals, proper planning ensures that your adventure is as seamless as it is spectacular. So, when are you setting sail?
